I realize we had a post here a few days ago on the the proposed flag designs (found here), but recently voted has opened up (here) and there's been some dissent among the ranks - that is, a (small) number of AVEN posters are against the creation of an "official" flag, for a variety of reasons. Chief among them was the criticism that a flag to represent an entire community/sexual orientation shouldn't be determined entirely by a small number of people from one very specific part of that community. Others argue that it's a useful symbol and tool in representing asexuality to others in a easily adaptable and recognisable way.
In that vein, I thought I'd take the debate to all the various parts of the asexual community I could think of (another already posted about it here on their own blog, here on Apositive, and also here at
asexuality and they also suggested the question to the fuckyeahaces tumblr) - what do you all think about the creation of a flag?

Date: 2010-07-06 08:44 am (UTC)I think a flag is generally a good idea, yes, and I know you can't poll every asexual person ever. However, I have issues with AVEN for reasons too long and tangential to go into now. As a result, it frustrates me that several of the flag designs incorporate eg the AVEN triangle. If this flag is going to exist, it should be for the asexual community, NOT for AVEN - and frankly I think a bunch of AVENites don't realise these two are not the same thing.
I am worries this will become another thing where if you use it you show your support for AVEN, more than for asexuality as a whole.

Date: 2010-07-06 09:13 am (UTC)1 - There are people on AVEN who identify the AVEN triangle as a purely AVEN thing and aren't up and up with using it for asexuality in general.
2 - There are places outside of AVEN that use it and refer to it as the asexual triangle.
3 - There is recognition that trying to do a gradient triangle on a flag is, well, impossible. And by some that a triangle is perhaps not the best feature in a design. But the first stage of this is getting past the worse ones, the ones that are overly complicated or just don't work for one reason or another. There's two more sets of voting rounds and I know that I'm going to open a poll both on here and LJ so people here get a vote too. I think the same is being done with other ace-places on the 'net.
